Cains beer to return to Liverpool
Cains beer is to be made at its Grade-II listed home for the first time in five years after a local entrepreneur acquired the Cains name and plans to open a new brewery in the building.
The brewery forms part of a £7 million redevelopment of the site which will also include a food market, sky bar, hotel and music venue.
The red brick building is currently home to a number of food and drink venues although the majority of it remains empty.
Andrew Mikhail, who owns a number of sites in the area, has plans to resurrect the beer brand and transform it into a visitor attraction reminiscent of Guinness’ St James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin.
The move would create around 200 jobs and be conducted in stages over the next fours years.
The first stage, taking place on the ground floor of the building is well underway, and Mikhail plans to open his Punch Tarmey bar in the venue next month.
He commented: “Cains is a resilient brand just like Liverpool and we’re really excited to be bringing Cains Brewery back, albeit with a new direction that will bring national attention to Liverpool for all the right reasons.
“I remember the Cains brand, and the yellow logo, and how huge it was to Liverpool. They called it ‘Liverpool in a pint’. So I thought ‘this is the chance of a lifetime’”.
Cains Brewery was founded in 1858 by Irish-born Robert Cain, a former cooper turner brewer, who began producing beer in the area around a decade before.
The brewery closed in 2013 due to financial difficulties.
