2009s lead the way in June

Several wines from the 2009 vintage led the way in June as the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 rose a solid 1.1%, seemingly unfazed by the poor en primeur campaign.

Having “lagged” in the first quarter, noted Liv-ex, the benchmark index has now posted three consecutive months of gains.

After an uninspiring en primeur campaign it was thought that the market might go into an early summer slump but, for now, that appears not to be the case.

As en primeur campaigns have become less dominant a force for many merchants so the secondary market has managed to increasingly avoid the shock of less than spectacular primeurs.

Super Tuscan Sassicaia’s 2009 vintage was the month’s best performer, rising 10.5% and Latour and Ducru Beaucaillou both posted 5% gains, as did Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’ Richebourg 2012 and 2010 Petrus.

Leading the month’s underperformers was Penfolds Grange 2010 (down 5.2%), followed by Comtes de Champagne 2006 and Cos d’Estournel’s 2003 while DRC’s 2012 Romanée-Conti and Armand Rousseau’s 2012 Chambertin also went down and have, reports Liv-ex been rather “volatile” for a while, rising one month and falling the next.
