Singapore university students asked to stop brewing beer on campus

Three students at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have been asked to stop brewing beer after their home brew enjoyed a whirlwind success among students on the campus.

The three students, Rahul Immandira, Heetesh Alwani and Abilash Subbaraman, have been brewing beer in the university’s Binjai Hall since last September, and its beer brand, called ‘Binjai Brew’, has been well-received on the campus.

According to a report by the Straits Times, the students sold more than 400 bottles, but their operation came to a halt after the university warned them that they were violating Singapore laws by brewing on NTU grounds and selling the beer.

According to the Singapore Customs’ website, individuals are allowed to brew beers and liquors at home for personal use, but if for commercial purpose, one has to apply for a manufacturing license.

Immandira told the newspaper, however, that the trio did not sell the beer, explaining: “Some of our friends appreciated it and they realised it cost us money, so they gave us some.”

It’s possible the students could continue to brew beer legally through contract brewing.

The school acknowledged the students’, “enterprising spirit, but it was misplaced”.
