Nine HK restaurants honoured in ‘Asia’s 50 Best’

The 2018 list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants was unveiled yesterday in Macau, with nine restaurants from Hong Kong being honoured while Gaggan from Bangkok defended its reigning title of Asia’s Best Restaurant for the fourth year in a row.

Amber (No.7) in Hong Kong meanwhile was named ‘The Best Restaurant in China’ for a third successive year. The nine Hong Kong restaurants on the list include three Michelin-starred venues: 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana (No.13), Ta Vie (rising 17 places to No.16), Lung King Heen (No.24) and Ronin (No.41), according to the list which was announced at an awards ceremony last night (27 March) at Wynn Palace in Macau.

The 2018 list also includes newcomers such as Neighborhood (No.32) and Black Sheep restaurant group’s Belon (No.40) while Caprice makes a welcome return at No.46. The Chairman (No.22) in Hong Kong and Mume in Taipei (No.18) tie for the Highest Climber Award with both restaurants rising 25 places.

Nicolas Lambert of Caprice is also the 2018 recipient of Asia’s Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Valrhona, known for his signature ‘La Framboise Reconstituée’.

Macau is represented by Jade Dragon (No.35) while Mainland China counts Shanghai restaurants Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet (No.8) and Fu He Hui (No.30).

The progressive Indian restaurant, Gaggan in Bangkok, claimed the number one spot for a fourth consecutive year, retaining the dual titles of The Best Restaurant in Asia, and The Best Restaurant in Thailand. 

The chef, however, is planning to close his restaurant in 2020.

The 2018 edition of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list boasts nine Thai entries, including newcomer Paste (No.31), headed by Bongkoch ‘Bee’ Satongun, who was also named Asia’s Best Female Chef 2018.
