Michelin-starred street food stand pops-up in London

The world’s first street food chef to gain a Michelin star for his Hawker Chan stand will be offering Londoners a Michelin-starred lunch for just £6 this week as part of a one-off pop-up.

Chan Hong Men of Hawker Chan

Based in Singapore, chef Chan Hong Men became the first street food vendor to receive a Michelin star for Hawker Chan in 2016. Having grown up on a farm, Hong Men left school at 15 to follow his dream of becoming a chef.

“My dream is to see more Singaporean cuisine and more of the undiscovered local hawker talent enjoyed on an international stage,” he said. “Whether you’re a restaurant chef or a street market hawker – with food you can never stop learning.”

Street food specialists KERB will be hosting Hong Men at its King’s Cross market in collaboration with Singapore Airlines and Singapore Tourism Board this week. The chef will be serving up just 200 portions a day of Hawker Chan’s signature soya sauce chicken and rice to Londoners for only £6 from today, through to Friday 16 March between 12-2pm.

Those lucky enough to grab the cheapest Michelin-starred lunch in London will also be able to enter a competition to win a trip to visit Hawker Chan’s original spot in Singapore, courtesy of Singapore Airlines.

Petra Barran founded KERB five years ago in King’s Cross to bring together a collective of traders and create a platform to help “legitimise” and promote street food talent across the city.

“It’s an honour to host the world’s first Michelin star street food trader at King’s Cross,” said Ian Dodds, Director of Markets and Communications. “We also hope this builds a wider conversation about the growing quality of street food in London – as it becomes more and more a part of life throughout the city we see no reason why one or two in London’s swelling hawker ranks couldn’t receive the same accolade.”
