New record price for red at CWG auction
The 33rd Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild auction came close to setting a new record again this year for its total price but did manage to set a new price for a single case of red wine sold.

Taking place at the Spier estate in Stellenbosch last weekend, the auction realised R13.2 million (£728,500) in total, just short of the record-breaking amount reached at last year’s sale.
There was increased activity from international buyers however, while a six-bottle case of Danie Steytler’s Kaapzicht Estate ‘The Ultimate Vision’ 2015 set a new record for a case of red wine sold at the auction – going for R16,600 (£910).
The highest amount paid for a case of white wine at this year’s sale was R7,000 (£390) for six bottles of Kevin Grant’s Ataraxia ‘Under the Gavel’ Chardonnay 2016.
Other top-selling lots were: Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2015, Leeu Passant Old Vines Cinsault 2015, Beyerskloof CWG Traildust Pinotage 2015 and Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2014 for the reds and The Love Boat White 2016 from Adi Badenhorst and Duncan Savage and the Paul Cluver The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2016 among the whites.
South African buyers dominated the sale, representing 119 of the 142 buyers and taking 79% of the almost 3,000 cases on sale.
A big spender (again) in particular was hotel group Tsogo Sun which bought almost R2m worth of wine, followed by Restaurant Mosaic, Grootbos, Singita and Signature Restaurant.
There were 23 foreign buyers in total hailing from countries as diverse as the UK, Hong Kong, the US, Denmark, Namibia, France, Australia, the Czech Republic, Australia and Luxembourg.
Miles Mossop, chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, said: “The results of our 2017 auction, in light of the current economic climate, bode well for the South African wine industry as a whole and prove that there is still room for quality top tier wines that push the envelope in terms of innovation, creativity and diversity of styles.”
