28-50 offers 2002 vintage Champagne for £15 a glass

Champagne lovers in London will no doubt be excited to learn that wine-focused restaurant chain 28-50 is offering one of the greatest prestige cuvée Champagnes from the best vintage of the last decade for just £15 a glass.

The offer sees Piper-Heidsieck’s Rare 2002 on sale by the glass for just £15 at all three of 28-50’s sites: Maddox Street, Fetter Lane and Marylebone Lane.

Although the drinks business does not usually write about drinks promotions, this particular listing appears so good, we had to share it with our readers.

Indeed, the Piper Rare 2002 was one of the few Champagnes to win the ultimate accolade of Master in this year’s Champagne Masters by the drinks business, a hard-to-win badge of honour for those drinks that receive more than 96 points from our panel of sparkling wine experts.

But it’s not just the chance to trial a Champagne of such quality by the glass that appeals, it’s also the amazingly low price for this cuvée, which is also one of the last great Champagne’s still available from this sought-after vintage.

At just £15 a glass, with each flute holding 125cl, even if one bought six measures – which would be the equivalent of a single bottle – one would only be spending £90, a sum that is smaller than the Piper Rare 2002 retail price of around £125 (that is, if you can still find a bottle on the shelves).

Described by Wine List Confidential as “a treat of a destination for wine obsessives”, 28-50 has a well-priced and concise list, expertly curated by the highly-respected Clement Robert MS.

Such an offer is part of a wider trend among London restaurants to use great wines and Champagnes sold by the glass at attractive prices to attract diners.
