17 new HK restaurants given Michelin Bib Gourmand awards

Seventeen new restaurants have been given The Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2018 ‘Bib Gourmand’ awards, bringing the total number of awardees across the two cities to 82.

The list, unveiled ahead of the official Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau 2018 launch on 30 November, highlighted value-for-money quality eateries in the city that can serve three course menu under HK$400.

Among the new awardees were, eight restaurants serving Cantonese Cuisine. One of them is Ju Xing Home, helmed by 39-year-old chef Wu Jiang Qiao, known for cooking up a variety of Cantonese-style side dishes. The place has become a go-to spot for many acclaimed chefs in Hong Kong.

Two restaurants serving Cantonese soup noodles also made the list this year: Eng Kee Noodle Shop, a family-run business which has been serving Cantonese soup noodles for 23 years; and Mak Man Kee, a 40-year-old establishment known for its prawn duck-egg noodles.

Trusty Congee King is another new entrant this year. Located in Wanchai, the eatery is renowned for its creamy congee cooked in fish broth. In addition to Cantonese cuisine, other Asian cuisines were awarded as well, with new entrants including Taiwanese Restaurant Qing Zhuo (directly translated to ‘Please Sit’ in English), Adam Cliff’s Samsen, known for its specialty Thai-style boat noodles.

“The selection highlights the richness of the local culinary scene and the quality of Cantonese cuisine,” comments Michael Ellis, international director in charge of the Michelin guides. “Our inspectors have discovered more local gourmet offerings including Cantonese stir fried, congee and noodle, dim sum in attractive prices.”

Altogether, 82 restaurants made on to the Bib Gourmand list – 73 in Hong Kong and nine in Macau. The full list can be viewed here.
