New Opus One ‘cheapest’ on market
The latest vintage of one of the leading US fine wine labels, Opus One, was released this week well below the price of already physical vintages.
The 2014 vintage was released at £2,500 per dozen, making it the ‘cheapest’ vintage on the market.
Awarded 95+ by Antonio Galloni, its score matches that of the 2012 and 2008 and is actually better than those of the 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011 vintages.
Galloni said the wine was “not an obvious Opus One, like the 2010, 2012 or 2013, but over time, I will not be surprised if it challenges or even surpasses some of those vintages.”
Elsewhere, the wine was marked 97 by James Suckling (“mesmerising”) and 17+ by Jancis Robinson MW (“Rather Bordeaux-like build but with a richer finish”).
Opus One is the most searched-for Californian wine on Wine Lister while the Rest of the World 50 Index on Liv-ex on which it is an important part is up 17.5% year-on-year (Jul ’16 – Jul ’17) and is currently out-performing the Bordeaux 500, which is up 14.6% over the same period.
