Cape winemakers make debut at Nedbank auction

A “treasure trove” of rare South African wines will go under the hammer at the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild auction this September, including wines from producers who’ve never submitted wines before.

Taking place at the Spier estate on 30 September, the sale will feature 61 wines that have been specially produced for the sale; 42 red wines, 18 white and one Méthode Cap Classique – a total of 2,962 six-bottle cases.

The number of lots being offered is 10 more than last year when the sale broke new records with R13.8 million raised.

Three members of the CWG are putting wines into the sale for the first time this year: Bruwer Raats, Morne Vrey and Carl van der Merwe.

Raats has produced a 100% Cinsault for his first auction wine, Vrey a Chardonnay, and Van der Merwe has put in two wines, a red blend and a 100% Roussanne – also a first for the auction.

Another new wine for the sale is a demi-sec Chenin Blanc which is being submitted by Sebastian Beaumont.

Adi Badenhorst and Duncan Savage meanwhile have decided to collaborate on two blends, a red and a white under the name of ‘Love Boat’.

The Love Boat white is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Semillon, Chenin Blanc and Viognier, while the red blend combines Shiraz, Grenache and Cinsault.

Once again, this year’s auction is in support of the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme for which there is a special lot of 44 magnums, each one from a producer with a wine at the sale.

“With greater variety on offer than ever before, our members continue to dig deep to find new varieties and exceptional parcels of vineyards to craft exciting wines. The strong category of red blends is particularly interesting this year and proof that we remain at the forefront of innovation in South African winemaking,” said CWG chairman, Miles Mossop of Tokara.
