Moldovans show support for ‘Wine of Moldova’ Airport
More than 8,000 Moldovans have voted to rename their country’s capital airport ‘Wine of Moldova Airport’, in support of the country’s growing wine industry.
The wine-related rebranding of the Chisinau International Airport was pitted against a dozen other options as part of an online survey, with a view to promoting the country’s burgeoning presence on the international wine market.
The name ‘Wine of Moldova Airport’ came out above several other suggestions, including Eugen Doga, whose “My Sweet and Tender Beast” was included by UNESCO in the top music masterpieces of the 20th century, the only female pilot in Moldova Olga Culic, and the fictional fairytale characters Pacala and Tandala.
It means that the airport could be rebranded to highlight the country’s winemaking heritage, with Wines of Moldova believing it to send an attractive message to tourists and the international community: “Welcome to Moldova – a country of wine!”
The survey was launched by the youth news portal diez.md to find an original and recognisable name for the country’s only international airport, and is not an official poll. Over 8000 voters participated in the survey.
