The week in pictures: Hong Kong

It has been a busy week in Hong Kong’s drinks trade. The drinks business Hong Kong has just concluded Asian Sauvignon Blanc and Rieslings Masters competition on Tuesday with a group of experienced judges including the city’s top wine buyers, wine consultants and sommelier. There are also plenty of bubbles to go around in this sunny weather including Champagne Barons de Rothschild, Prosecco from Italy’s Villa Sandi and crisp wines from Sicily’s Sallier de Latour. Judges at the Asian Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling Masters organised by the drinks business Hong Kong tasted through around 100 samples of Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling submitted from all over the world including Greece, Israel, Australia and New Zealand to name a few, and were impressed by the quality of the wines at the competition. Two of our Asian Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling Masters judges, William Chan, general manager and sommelier of famed Cantonese restaurant Cuisine Cuisine, and winemaker Peter Nicholas, were having a laugh after finishing up a morning of judging.

Jeremy Stockman, general manger of Watson’s Wine, Hong Kong’s biggest wine merchant, was one of the judges at our Asian Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling Masters held on Tuesday.

Champagne Barons de Rothschild’s wines were on pour at a caviar tasting event at Emporio Antico organised by local importer ASC Fine Wines. The brand was founded jointly by three branches of the Rothschild family (Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, and Baron Edmond de Rothschild). The Champagne house is expecting 30% sales growth in Hong Kong and mainland China this year, its managing director, Frédéric Mairesse, told dbHK recently.

Villa Sandi’s launch party in Hong Kong with ASC Fine Wines showcased six of its Prosecco wines at the eclectic Hutong restaurant including Spumante Brut Blanc de Blancs, Prosecco Spumante DOC Treviso Brut ‘Il Fresco’, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Spumante Extra Dry, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Spumante Cuvée Oris Dry, Cartizze DOCG brut Vigna la Rivett and ‘Il Fresco’ rosé.

A range of Sicilian wines from Sallier de Latour winery, which occupies about 77 hectares in the Jato valley, were presented at a tasting hosted by local importer Kerry Wines at Operetta restaurant. The Sallier de La Tour range also includes three typical Sicilian single varietal wines: Grillo, Inzolia and Nero d’Avola, as well as a red and a white blend.
