James Suckling hosted Bordeaux Confidential En Primeur 2016 event in Hong Kong on 25 & 26 May at Four Season Hotel, attracting more than 1,000 guests. This year, about 200 or so attendees were from Mainland China, many of whom are distributors for COFCO Wine & Wine, the state-owned wine and spirits company. The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux was hailed as “exceptional” by the American wine critic.

James Suckling was honored by the Italian government in Hong Kong with a knighthood as a Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia for his efforts to promote Italian wines in Asia. The wine critic first visited Italy in early 1980s and moved to Tuscany in 1998 while he was still working for Wine Spectator.

Hong Kong’s trade professionals were treated to a selection of fine Santenay wines with different ‘climats’ and expressions during a live broadcast with Jean-Pierre Renard. Located to the south of Beaune, Santenay produces 79% of red wines and 21% of white wines. Its white wine is amicably compared to as ‘Superman’ by Jean-Pierre and its red wine as tennis player Roger federer.
