Sam Caporn MW launches wine infographic
Master of Wine and Bollinger Medal winner Sam Caporn has relaunched her website to showcase her new infographic, The Wine Flavour Tree.
The Wine Flavour Tree is a new aid to help consumers identify flavour profiles found in wine. The tree includes 40 different flavours, divided into 10 different branches (five for white wines and five for reds.)
Each branch has four different flavours and is a given a name that can be founded and identified in a key at the bottom of the image. This key then offers grape varieties associated with the flavour profile described.
The flavours get progressively stronger further up the tree, representing the progression from lighter to fuller bodied, richer wines.
Speaking to db Sam said that “the Tree is really a bit of everything. I use it a lot doing private and corporate tastings as we can ‘taste around the tree’” however, she adds, “crucially people also don’t need me there at all, they could go to a store armed with the infographic and make selections themselves.”
She continued: “I think as wine professionals it’s really easy to forget how little many consumers actually know about wine and how intimidating it can be when starting out on the wine journey. The Tree was designed specifically to give consumers a simple yet striking guide as to the many different aromas and flavours that can be found in wine and hopefully to impart greater confidence and knowledge in a fun, visual and easy-to-access way.”
Sam became both a Master of Wine and a mother in 2011, providing her with “the perfect opportunity to step out of the corporate world” and work for herself. She has previously worked as a buyer for Direct Wines, wine development manager at Accolade and tastings co-ordinator at Wine Magazine.
The ‘red fruits & roses’ branch.
The Bollinger Medal is awarded in recognition of excellence in tasting and outstanding achievement in the Institute of Masters of Wine practical examinations.
The website (themistressofwine.com) which also displays information about wine tastings and a ‘wine o’clock wines’ section, went live on 1 May.
We have Sam Caporn MW’s wine tree displayed in our dinning room. I love having this stylish and somewhat alluring wine infograhic readily accessible to guide my senses.
