Borough Wines extends into south London

Independent London wine merchant Borough Wines is extending  further into South London as it opens its ninth store next week, with a tenth to follow later in the summer.

The new outlet will be its first shop south of the river, sited on Battersea Park Road and a stone’s throw from the new developments at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station.

The wine range at the new Battersea shop will have a strong focus on organic, biodynamic and natural wines, the team confirmed, as well as offering its on-trap barrel refill system that allows customers to fill reusable glass bottles in the store.

There will be a selection of craft beers, including international and more unusual brews from the US, Japan and Australia, alongside local beers from South London including from Hop Stuff, Bianca Road and Gipsy Hill breweries, and its own Brewery Below, which is based in the Islington shop.

It will also stock a selection of spirits from local producers including Peckham’s Little Bird Gin and the East London Liquor Co., as well as global producers such as Kings County, Nikka and Rogue.

The Battersea shop will offer free local same day delivery, as well as a offering a subscription service for local businesses.

Borough Wines & Beers founder Muriel Chatel described it as a “dream location”.

“Battersea is a very cosmopolitan area and a hotspot for the European community; we also have strong personal links here, so it seemed the perfect place for our first South London shop.

“Battersea Park Road is a dream location for us – a bustling local high street, full of personality and surrounded by independent businesses. With the development of Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station locally – it’s also an exciting time to be joining the neighbourhood.

The company has boosted the team over the last seven months as it grows, appointing the London Brewing Company’s general manager Mitchel Adams to the new role of retail operations manager to oversee its retail outlets and take responsibility for beer and cider buying, as well as a consultant to coordinate its training and education programme. In January it appointed Enotria’s former director of sales Kent Barker to lead its rebranded wholesale business, which brings together its gastro-pub, bar, venue and restaurants business, Expression du Terroir, and its retail concessions, Borough Wine Corners.

The retailer opened the doors  of its first shop in Borough Market on 2002, and has since build a chain of shops across the north and east of London, including Hackney, Dalston, Stoke Newington, Kensal Rise, Clerkenwell, and Islington as well as a wine and book shop in Hastings.
