Sting was spotted checking out the competition at this year’s ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany. The British musician, singer, songwriter and actor is also the owner of the 350-acre biodynamic Tuscan estate, Tenuta Il Palagio.
Since 1999, Sting and Trudie have painstakingly restored the previously dilapidated 16th century villa and outbuildings. Today, the estate produces four reds (Message in a Bottle, Sister Moon, When We Dance and Casino delle Vie), one white (Message in a Bottle Bianco) and a rosé (Beppe Rosato).
The couple announced the launch of the Il Palagio Tasting Tour at ProWein on Sunday. The tour features a travelling (and wine-filled) campervan that will allow visitors to sample the range as well as the olive oil and honey also produced on the estate. The wines will include Beppe Rosato 2016, When We Dance 2015, Casino delle Vie 2014, Sister Moon 2014, Message in a Bottle Bianco 2016, and Message in a Bottle Rosso 2015.
Ralf Hoegger, sales and distribution manager and organiser of the tour, will travel in the van and serve customers at each stop. The initiative aims to boost brand awareness and knowledge of the Tuscan estate and winery.
Before taking on the estate, Sting acknowledged that he knew little about wine and winemaking, “I’m from the north of England so I drank beer from age 16 and younger.
“I didn’t have a glass of wine until I was in my late twenties.”
Despite his initial ignorance, Sting’s wines have gone on to achieve critical acclaim under the guidance of biodynamic consultant Alan York, wine consultant Paolo Caciorgna and estate manager Paolo Rossi.
Last year, Sister Moon – a blend of 40% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in new French barriques for 24 months – was voted the number one celebrity wine by ratings app Vivino.
It was also named one of Italy’s finest 100 wines by the organisers of the trade fair OperaWine, a collaboration between Vinitaly, Veronafiere and US wine magazine, Wine Spectator.
