Anti-counterfeiting seminars to take place in HK

Wine authenticator Maureen Downey will host a series of seminars on fine wine fraud and counterfeiting in Hong Kong next week.

In the wake of a successful series of courses held in London late last year, the ‘Wine Fraud, Counterfeiting & Authentication Presentation and TCM Authentication Trainings Levels I and II’ will be held at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong from 8 to 10 February.

The seminars cover the history of counterfeits from ancient time to the more recent cases involving Hardy Rodenstock and Rudy Kurniawan to the implementation of the Chai Wine Vault powered by Everledger that was launched last year.

Attendees will also learn more about how to authenticate wine labels, bottles, corks, glass and capsules; issues of consistency and its importance; the latest counterfeiting techniques and the most commonly used, followed by workshops designed to put that knowledge into practice.

The London seminars and the issues raised in them were covered extensively by the drinks business, including questions of the amount of fake fine wine currently in the market and how much of Kurniawan’s stock is still being resold over and over again.

Feedback from the London tasting was positive with attendees commenting on the quality of the presentation and what they had learned.
