Koshu of Japan’s seventh annual trade and press tasting will take place on Wednesday, 1 February 2017 in London, with twelve producers making the journey to the capital. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample still and sparkling Koshu wines from the Yamanashi Prefecture as well as wine made from Bordeaux blends, Chardonnay and Tempranillo, among others.

Koshu is the most well-known grape variety native to Japan. Grown primarily in the Yamanashi Prefecture (a landlocked region comprising of the fertile Kōfu Basin surrounded by the highest mountains in Japan) it flourishes in the well-drained volcanic soil.

Since launching onto the UK market seven years ago, Koshu’s fresh, low-alcohol style has gained recognition from high street retailer Marks & Spencer.

Speaking in London, Lynne Sherriff MW, director of Koshu of Japan for UK and Europe confirmed: “The UK remains an important market for our wines. Trading is growing organically – as the wines gain a reputation for quality – and, despite the higher than average prices that our wines command, we have established a name and place in the market for seven producers.”

Sherriff continued: “We have more producers wanting to establish themselves in the UK but we must continue to do so in a way that is a long-term investment, to ensure the wines find the correct positioning in a very crowded market.”
