WSET launches round-the-world wine course at sea

Offering what must be the most glamorous route to attaining a wine and spirits qualification, the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) has partnered with Cunard to launch a round-the-world course at sea, taking in over 70 countries.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2

Available on Cunard’s flagship ocean liner Queen Mary 2, the WSET programme will offer sea-faring wine and spirits enthusiasts the chance to attain its Level 1 Award in Wines, Spirits and Sake, or Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits on board at its Cunard Wine Academy.

Courses will be available to any guest booked on a westbound transatlantic or round-world cruise, with plans to extend courses to the Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth later in 2017.

On-board classes will be led by WSET certified educator Andrés Solís Lira, originally from Chile’s Cachapoal wine country. Lira has worked in the wine trade for the past decade joining Cunard in 2009 as a sommelier on Queen Mary 2 and rising to the position of educator for the Cunard Wine Academy.

The Level 1 course can be completed in five days on any westbound transatlantic cruise, while guests aboard round-the-world voyages will be able to take part in a 12-day course to achieve their WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits.

The first voyage to offer WSET courses will be the westbound transatlantic crossing departing Southampton on 15 December, while the first round-the-world voyage offering WSET courses will set sail on 10 January 2017 from Southampton.

Cunard already lays claim to hosting the “world’s finest” floating wine cellar, stocking a collection of 484 fine wines, including the highly sought after California Screaming Eagle at $4,500 per bottle, which can be ordered by the glass. Highlights from its list includes a first growth wine flight featuring the five premiers crus of the Médoc and a unique collection of vintage Port dating back to 1840.

Guests can book a WSET course by calling Cunard ahead of their journey or speaking to the sommelier whilst on board.
