As part of the initiative, Wine Australia will host 50 of the top somms on the planet and encourage them to discover the country’s diverse wine offering.
The group will include sommeliers from the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and the Best Sommelier in the World competition, in addition to top sommeliers in Australia and New Zealand.
“This event presents a wonderful opportunity for us to engage with sommeliers who are at the top of their game and showcase the sophistication and diversity of Australian wine alongside our unique produce,” said Wine Australia CEO Andreas Clark.
“This will be the first time we have so many of the world’s best and most influential sommeliers in the country at the same time.
“We look forward to immersing them in our dynamic wine culture and hope they walk away with a refreshed perspective and love of Australian wine,” he added.
The somms will participate in a bespoke itinerary devised by Wine Australia, which will include visits to some of the city’s top restaurants.
In addition, the group will visit a cherry-picked selection of wineries in nearby regions to Melbourne, from the Yarra Valley to the Mornington Peninsula.
Wine Australia the official wine partner of the awards and has picked a panel of Australian wine experts to chose the wines being served during the event, including Master Sommelier Franck Moreau, MS, wine writer Mike Bennie and Master of Wine Andrew Calliard.
“Wine is a key aspect of the gastronomic experience and Australia boasts some of the finest producers in the world, so this collaboration makes perfect sense,” said William Drew, group editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants programme will run in Melbourne from 1–8 April 2017.
