Screaming Eagle and DP to lead Bonhams sales

Napa super star Screaming Eagle will be the centre of attention at Bonhams’ next auction in San Francisco, while rare Dom Pérignon will be up for sale in London.

Taking place on 2 December in the Bay area, the US sale will be led by 13 vintages of Screaming Eagle. Each lot consists of three bottles from selected vintages between 1996 and 2013, including the vaunted 1997, three bottles of which are estimated at US$9,500–$13,000.

Further top US wines at the sale will include a vertical selection of Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select from 2001-2011, with six bottles from each vintage in that span.

Other top lots include six packs of Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto Riserva 2008 ($3,200–$4,500 apiece); a Jeroboam of 1961 Château Lafite ($6,500–$8,500) and six bottles of 2010 Cheval Blanc ($4,000–$5,000).

Bonhams senior fine wine specialist, Erin McGarth said: “This is a wide ranging sale with more than 400 high quality lots at attractive estimates. The superb choice of Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon is a definite highlight, with Italian superstars and new California cults as well. There are wines of all kinds at all prices to help kick off the holiday season.”

Meanwhile, in London on 8 December there will be old Champagne, Tokaji, Port and white Burgundy on offer.

Old Champagnes on offer will include: a bottle of 1949 Dom Pérignon (£350–£450); six bottles of the 1964 (£1,800–£2,200) and a dozen of the 1971 (£3,500–£4,200).

Other Champagnes will be six-packs of 1990 Salon (£3,200–£3,800); six magnums of Pol Roger’s Cuvée Winston Churchill 1982 (£3,000–£4,000); a Jeroboam of 1999 Cristal (£850–£1,100) and a Methuselah of 1990 Cristal (£3,200–£3,800).

White Burgundy includes a case of Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 2002 (£3,500–£4,000) and a Jeroboam of the Bâtard-Montrachet 2002 (£900–£1,000).

Other top lots for sale will be six bottles of Graham’s 1945 (£3,000–£4,000) and four half-litre bottles of Tokaji Aszú Essencia 1963 (£320–£400).

Richard Harvey MW, the head of Bonhams’ wine department, commented: “Christmas is the time to break out something special. We always have a wide range of unusual and distinctive wines in our December sale and this year is no exception. It’s difficult to pick a favourite but the two bottles of Meo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée au Cros Parantoux 2001 (£1,300–£1,500) and the case of Penfold’s Grange 1986 (£3,500–£4,200) would be hard to resist.”
