The Savoy’s American Bar named best in Europe
The 2016 World’s 50 Best Bars award winners were announced last week, with London proving it can compete with the likes of New York by dominating the top 10.

While New York’s Dead Rabbit was named the World’s Best Bar, The Savoy’s American Bar took second place, becoming the best bar in Europe. Overall, London bars accounted for five of the top 10 entries, with New York taking four spots and Athens one.
The iconic American Bar, housed within The Savoy hotel, has been serving up Martinis for more than a century and was where bartender Harry Craddock gained inspiration for his 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book.
“We are incredibly proud of this recognition, which clearly demonstrates our commitment to honouring the legacy of the American Bar whilst pushing the boundaries of the bar industry”, said the American Bar manager, Declan McGurk.
The American Bar has been featured in the World’s 50 Best Bars list every year since it opened in 2010, and has only been listed outside of the top 10 once.
Led by head bartender Erik Lorincz, earlier this year The American Bar launched a new London-inspired menu – a cocktail menu that combines cocktails with storytelling to take guests on a journey around six London boroughs.
Coming in behind The American Bar was Dandelyan, The Connaught Bar, Happiness Forgets and The Gibson, which only opened last year.
Other top 50 awards – voted on by nearly 500 leading figures in the industry – went to London favourites Callooh Callay and Nightjar, a bar that maintained its standing despite head bartender Marian Beke leaving to set-up The Gibson. Soho’s Bar Termini and Oriole both joined the list for the first time.
In taking the top spot Dead Rabbit bar toppled The Langham’s Artesian bar, which had been named the world’s best bar since 2012, but this year fell completely from the top 50 after the departure of its dynamic bartending duo, Simone Caporale and Alex Kratena earlier this year.
