Markus Molitor acquires Saar winery
German winemaker Markus Molitor has acquired the old state winery, Domäne Serrig, on the Saar river.
The acquisition adds a further 22 hectares to the 80 Molitor currently runs across 15 sites and 170 parcels in the Mosel.
“I certainly can’t complain that I am bored,” said Molitor.
“But the possibility of obtaining an undivided expanse of 22 hectares of vineyard – I could not pass that up.”
The ‘Staatsdomäne’ was built in 1904 on the orders of the German emperor, Wilhelm II. It was developed into a model estate using the latest viticultural techniques both in the vineyards and cellar. Before the First World War it was one of the biggest vineyards in Germany and one of the most prestigious.
The winery was first privatised in 1990.
