Ygay Blanco awarded 100 points

The ‘iconic’ 1986 vintage of Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva has become the first white Spanish wine to gain 100 points, awarded by Luis Gutierrez of Wine Advocate.

Spanish wine expert, Gutierrez declared it “one of the best white wines I’ve ever tasted in my whole life”, as the oldest Rioja-based winery, Marqués de Murrieta celebrates its 165th anniversary.

Wine Advocate created a vertical tasting of Castillo Ygay Blanco, from 1919 to 1986. Among the vintages tasted, the critic also gave top marks to two other historic vintages: Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1919 and 1932 which sees the winery as the first in the world to achieve 100 points by Parker three times in one tasting,

After spending 252 months in 225 litre American oak barrels and 67 months in concrete tanks, the 1986 vintage is aged in bottles for more than three years and the new release after 30 years “represents the best expression” of the wine.

Jebsen Fine Wines in Hong Kong announced in July of this year that it has acquired a select parcel of the 1986 vintage which is available now to pre-order.

In celebration of the special vintage, Jebsen will also host an Ygay tasting and dinner at the Conrad Hotel later on this month.
