Warhol’s wine: Cuvaison and the Andy Warhol Foundation partnership

Cuvaison Estate Wines in Napa Valley has released two limited edition estate wines whose labels feature rarely seen screen-prints by Andy Warhol.

The Andy Warhol by Cuvaison Collection is a result of a joint collaboration between Cuvaison and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and comprises a 2014 Chardonnay from Cuvaison’s Carneros estate and a 2014 red Bordeaux blend from its Brandlin vineyard on Mount Veeder.

The wine box set’s labels depict rarely seen Warhol screen-prints that were commissioned by the winery’s owner, Alexander Tai Schmidheiny in the early 1980’s where Warhol took numerous Polaroids of grapes which were used to create silkscreen prints. Artwork for each wine label in the collection was hand-chosen by Cuvaison, The Andy Warhol Foundation and the Schmidheiny family.

“Cuvaison and The Andy Warhol Foundation have long discussed the opportunity to bring this unique, rarely seen body of work to the public. Now, nearly thirty-five years later, we are excited to share this collaboration with wine lovers and Warhol collectors alike,” said Jay Schuppert, president of Cuvaison.

“All three installments of the collection reflect Warhol’s signature Pop-Art style and bring the complete vision of the commissioned screen-prints to life on each wine bottle.”

To celebrate the launch of the collection, Cuvaison will have 10 original Warhol artworks on display in their tasting rooms’ gallery which are on loan from Christie’s New York.

Retailing for US$250, the three limited-edition two-bottle Collector’s sets will be launched this autumn with further releases planned for 2017 and 2018.
