Viña Ventisquero launches new Sauvignon Blanc in UK

Chilean wine producer Viña Ventisquero is launching its Root:1 Sauvignon Blanc into the UK market.

The Chilean Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Casablanca Valley 25km from the Pacific Coast, from grapes grown on ungrafted root systems that come from original European rootstocks unaffected by phylloxera in the 19th century. The company says the use of ungrafted roots, which were planted in 1998, gives the wine greater fruit purity.

It is showcasing the new sku at the Mercado Chilena 2016 tasting on at The Old Truman Brewery later this month.

Viña Ventisquero’s Root: 1 Carménère was launched in the UK in 201. Listed by Morrisons, it has seen strong performance of around 300% without promotion, according to Viña Ventisquero’s key account director, Americo Hernandez. UK sales have increased from 2,000 9L cases to 10,000 cases, he noted and he sees a good opportunity for the Sauvignon Blanc in the UK.

“All being well, we hope to have the Sauvignon Blanc in the UK market in the first trimester of 2017,” he said.

The range currently comprises five skus, including a Cabernet Sauvignon and a ‘Heritage Red’ from the Colchagua and Maipo Valley as well as a Pinot Noir from Casablanca, which was added to the range three years ago. Hernandez is hoping to launch the Root: 1 Pinot Noir, into the UK market, pointing to the strong performance of the grape variety in Nielsen’s latest data.

The brand was originally developed with an American partner for the US market and launched in 2005, with the decision to make it into a global brand following in 2010, after sales passed 200,000 9L cases. It has since launched in 20 markets, with around 60% sold in the US, followed by key markets in Japan, the UK, Canada and Brazil – but Hernandez says there is great potential in China, where the concept has been translated “very successfully”.

The company will also unveil revamped packaging for its seven-strong Reserva range, which has a more prominent tagline, ‘Soul of the Andes’ on pack.
