Typing Room’s Westcott in HK pop up
Brit chef Lee Westcott of the Typing Room, who also oversaw the launch of 22 Ships and Ham & Sherry, is back in Hong Kong for a one night only pop-up dinner at Aberdeen Street Social.
Working alongside Aberdeen Street Social’s executive chef, Chris Whitmore, Westcott has dreamed up an imaginative alternatives of some of his signature dishes including heritage tomatoes with ricotta, chamomile and cherries, and hamachi with kohlarabi, fermented tomato, sorrel and yeasted cauliflower, capers, raisins and mint.
Whitmore’s crowd-pleasing dish of roast duck breast, confit leg, pickled squash and orange granola will follow afterwards and then Westcott adds a thoroughly British dessert of yoghurt, apple and dill.
Artur Aronov, Aberdeen Street Social’s sommelier has also paired each course with a European wine such as a Francois Mikulski NV Cremant de Bourgogne, 2011 “Ca di Pian” Barbera d’Asti La Spinetta, and a Ximenez Spinola from Andalucia.
The six-course dinner menu is priced at HK$800 per person for food only and HK$1,400 with paired wines.
Originally from London, Westcott started off honing his talents at the Savoy Grill and Galvin at Windows with stages at Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York, René Redzepi’s Noma in Copenhagen and Gordon Ramsey’s Claridge’s back in London.
He then worked with Tom Aikens for four years at Aiken’s eponymous restaurant in Chelsea, becoming head chef for the final two years and helping the restaurant regain its Michelin star.
Westcott attracted the attention of Jason Atherton, who asked him to oversee his two new restaurants in Hong Kong – 22 Ships and Ham & Sherry where he worked as executive chef until he returned to London in 2014 to open his own restaurant, Typing Room which is backed by Atherton.
Typing Room is based in the Town Hall Hotel in East London’s Bethnal Green where Westcott also looks after the hotel’s brasserie, Corner Room, and its Peg & Patriot bar.
