Singapore Uber driver suspended for drinks bragging
An Uber driver has been suspended by the company after his passenger complained that he boasted he had “been out drinking” before he picked her up at 4am.
As reported by the Straits Times, the passenger, Nicole Lee described her “horrifying” 30 minute journey home as the unnamed Uber driver bragged about drinking, offered to take her to a house party and then asked for her phone number.
He then refused to let her out of the car at her house until she did so.
Initially Lee said she thought the driver was just “showing off” about drinking as he seemed to drive well but started worrying when they approached a police roadblock and he said, “I cannot take the [breathalyser] test”.
However, he told the police that he was an Uber driver taking her home and was apparently allowed through.
Lee then said he later asked for her phone number and refused to let her go until she complied.
“At that point, I was quite eager to go home, so I gave it to him,” she said, adding that she “wanted to elicit a ‘confession’ from him later that he had been drinking.”
In a WhatsApp conversation Lee showed The Sunday Times, the driver replied “200 for 2 towers or one bottle of Chivas”, when she asked him about his drinking.
Uber later confirmed with The Sunday Times that the driver has been suspended and investigations are ongoing.
