Wine List Confidential new entry: Clipstone

Clipstone – Wine List Confidential Score: 91

A succinct list – Fay Maschler in her recent Evening Standard restaurant review called it ‘eloquent – which manages to say a lot with little.

Clipstone is the co-venture of Will Lander (also behind our WLC top entry, Quality Chop House) and Daniel Morgenthau (ex of 10 Greek Street). It is the more casual, local bistro-type affair to the pair’s very popular Michelin-starred venue Portland – itself already pretty casual in appearance and feel.

Here the menus for both food and wine are short and sweet, with a nice economy to them. One thing you’ll spot instantly when looking at the single-page wine list is its ‘On-Tap’ section.

Keg wine has come on great guns in the past year or two, such that suppliers like OW Loeb, Roberson and Bibendum can offer a good range of remarkably high-quality wines from talented winemakers; in turn restos like Clipstone can offer you an enjoyable glass for as modest an outlay as £3.50 (for 125ml of its deliciously vibrant and fleshy Bernado Farina Verdejo).

Among the reds, Marcarini’s Langhe Nebbiolo is decent value for a major Piedmont name, at £48; there’s also some interesting more mature stuff, including a 1999 Bordeaux blend from DeLille Cellars in Washington State, at £75.
