db Drinks: Summer Sky Riviera at The Gherkin
The concept: Sipping cocktails in the tip of The Gherkin and watching the sun set over St Paul’s is hard to beat. To have the chance to drink in a jaw-droppingly beautiful panoramic view of the capital from inside one of the city’s most iconic buildings is a treat, and over the summer, its tip has been transformed to transport you to the French Riviera.
The Décor: While the 40th floor of a London skyscraper is about as far as you can get from the French Riviera in the ‘50s, it’s worth suspending your disbelief and getting into the theme, which is brought to life via vibrant bunches of lavender, turquoise cushions, nautical touches and vegetable carts heaving with giant tomatoes and sunshine yellow peppers.
The cocktails: The Gherkin has created four bespoke Tanqueray No. 10-based cocktails priced at £11 each for the pop-up, which runs until 1 September. We particularly liked the Marseille, featuring Tanqueray No. 10, pastis, verveine, cucumber and Provençal herbs, and the Nice, made with Tanqueray no. 10, Aperol, orange blossom and bergamot.
Signature sip: The floral, bitter-sweet Saint Tropez, which blends Tanqueray No. 10, rose liqueur, sweet vermouth, grapefruit juice and rose water.
The food: £25 gets you a glass of Louis Roederer and six oysters, or you can opt for the meet platter rammed with farmhouse paté, rich rillettes and spicy chorizo, or a cheese board featuring French classics like Comté and brie.
Don’t leave without: Ordering a side of decadent truffle cream cheese.
