Santa Rita president of the board dies
Juan Agustín Figueroa, president of Viña Santa Rita’s board of directors, has died aged 82.
Figueroa played a pivotal role in the development of Santa Rita after Ricardo Claro acquired the company in 1980.
He joined the board of directors the same year, a position he held up until his death save for a brief interval from 1990-1994 when he was the minister of agriculture during the administration of former president Patricio Aylwin.
As an attorney, Figueroa made an important contribution to negotiations for Santa Rita over in recent decades.
In his role as minister for agriculture he was a strong advocate for farmers and a tenacious campaigner for DO wines, which has been the foundation of the development of Chilean wine in the export markets.
In the cultural arena, Figueroa worked hard to promote the winery’s historical heritage. He also founded and presided over the Pablo Neruda Foundation, which oversees the legacy of the celebrated Chilean poet.
