Sainsbury’s trials same day and one-hour delivery service

Sainsbury’s is piloting a same day delivery service across three of its London branches, as well as a limited one-hour delivery service operated from an app.

Three stores in and around London – Streatham Common, Richmond and Brookwood – are set to trial the new same delivery service, which will operate for both home delivery and Click & Collect orders. According to a report in the Evening Standard today, a further 27 stores are set to come on-stream by Christmas following the opening of the retailer’s new fulfilment centre in Bromley-by-Bow. This facility will enable it to serve an additional 25,000 customers each week across the capital, and is set to create around 900 new jobs.

It comes shortly after the retailer started trialling an app offering a one-hour delivery service from its Wandsworth branch, which allows customers to order 20 items – including beers, wines and spirits – and have them delivered within 60 minutes.

The one-hour trial is being run its mobile app ‘Chop Chop’, and applies to customers who live in a 3km radius of the Garrett Lane branch. There is no minimum spend, and although in-store promotions apply, it does not offer Nectar points, and alcohol can only be ordered during the stores’ normal licensing hours.

The app, which is only available on Apple smart phones, is available to download at the Apple store.

The moves marks a significant ramp up in the retailer’s online ambition, following its announcement at the end of April that it was doubling the number of Click & Collect grocery sites over the coming year to 200.
