John Torode launches rosé with McGuigan Wines

TV chef John Torode may have found Australia’s answer to Provencal rosé with a new pale pink wine made in partnership with McGuigan Wines.

Using Pinot Noir grown in the Adelaide Hills, the rosé was launched in London yesterday at the Belsize Park branch of Wine Rack, the off-licence chain owned by Conviviality Retail.

According to Martin Papcun, Wine Rack’s buying assistant, the new wine has been deliberately styled on Provencal rosé, which is currently hugely popular in the UK for its pale pink colour and light body, red fruit flavour, and dry, refreshing finish.

He said that the McGuigan rosé, which comes in a clear glass bottle, was the right pale pink colour, and had the ideal flavour profile, while he told db that he believed the fact it was made with Pinot Noir, which is prominently stated on the front label, would provide a further draw.

The wine will retail for £9.99, with Papcun stressing that it was important the rosé sneaked below the £10 mark for sales success.

The rosé comes under the MT brand, which is used for collaborative wine projects by McGuigan Wines and John Torode.

Aussie-born, UK-based TV chef John Torode officially launched the wine yesterday evening at the Belsize Park branch of Wine Rack, where he barbecued steak outside the off-licence to complement the rosé.

He told db that he had been involved in the blending of the pink wine, and had made sure it was made to go with food, and has subsequently created a grilled squid and rocket salad recipe to pair with the rosé.

Chief winemaker at McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan, said: “Working with John means the wine style is uniquely balanced for a range of superb dishes.”

Torode, added: “I wanted to create something different with the MT collaboration this time. Neil and I took a chance with this rosé and we’re thrilled with the result. The colour and flavour of the wine is superb and I can’t wait to see how it’s received.”

The rosé will be available only in Wine Rack stores in the UK with a retail price of £9.99.
