Palmer 2015 barrel makes HK$3m at auction

A 225-litre barrel of 2015 Palmer topped the best-selling lots at the estate’s first ex-cellar sale in Hong Kong at the weekend, making over HK$3 million.

The collection of old and rare Château Palmer sourced from its cellars and the cellars of négociant Maison Mähler-Besse & Franck Mähler-Besse, made HK$15.1 million (US$1.9m) overall, with results being “well above…expectations”.

There was reportedly “incredibly fierce bidding for historic vintages”, with the best-selling lots almost exclusively comprised of cases of the 1961 and 1959 vintages.

One full case of 1961 Palmer realised HK$465,500 (US$59,679) and the most expensive case of the ’59 went for HK$367,500 (HK$47,115).

The leading lot, however, was a full barrel of the 2015 effectively being sold en primeur. It realised HK$3m (US$392,628) which was six times above its original estimate.

Thomas Duroux, CEO of Château Palmer, said: “The sale result today was well above our best expectation and I am pleased to see that Château Palmer is well received across Asia.  All wines on offer came directly from the Château and the cellars of Maison Mähler-Besse & Franck Mähler-Besse, and were reconditioned and carefully inspected. With all wines sold 100%, it proves that Asian wine collectors value the quality and provenance of the wine they drink and collect. This sale attests to the strength of Sotheby’s and we are thrilled to have partnered with them to offer such a wide and impeccable selection of wine to Asia for the first time.”

Jamie Ritchie, Sotheby’s worldwide head of wine, added: “We were delighted to offer an entire sale dedicated to the wines of Château Palmer, continuing our series of sales focused on ‘direct from the château’ provenance.

“In the last 25 days, we have held three single-owner sales, one each in London, New York and Hong Kong, totalling US$26 million – over US$1 million a day. These sales ensure our position as a worldwide market leader, offering the greatest wines, with the best provenance, direct from both wineries and private collections.”
