DRC steals the show at Zachys auction

A Methuselah of 1985 Domaine de La Romanée-Conti sold for HK$918,750, the highest selling lot of Zachys recent Hong Kong sale.

Over 95% of all lots were sold at Zachys bumper two-day sale in Hong Kong which realised HK$69,759,708 (US$9m) and featured classics from five private collections as well as other consignments.

Bidders across the globe bid competitively on rare back vintages and large formats of Domaine de La Romanee Conti, Le Pin and Petrus with a Methusaleh (six litre) bottle of Domaine de La Romanée-Conti 1985 going for HK$918,750 (US$118,548), 12 bottles of Le Pin 1982 in their original wooden case selling for HK$857,500 (US$110,645) and a case of Petrus 1989 being snapped up for HK$416,500 (US$53,742).

Domaine Leroy also had its fair share of the limelight with Romanée Saint Vivant Domaine Leroy 1997 selling for HK$15,000 (US$1,935) and six bottles of Corton Renardes Domaine Leroy1995 realizing HK$51,450 (US$6,639) – the highest price ever achieved for this particular vintage.

Elsewhere, an extremely rare offering of Karuizawa The Dragon 52 Year Old Cask #5627 Single Cask 1960 went for HK$857,500 (US$110,645), the second most expensive lot of the whole sale.

However, the high selling price of Domaine de La Romanée-Conti follows closely after a bottle of the 2005 vintage fetched HK$343,000 (US$44,365) at Christie’s recent auction which also held in Hong Kong, sending a clear message that Asian bidders are still avidly chasing after premium Burgundy.
