Burgundy’s 2014 uncorked in HK
In honour of the ‘elegant’ 2014 vintage, BIVB will host Hong Kong’s first ever Bourgogne Week set to run at the end of this month.
Following on from the UK’s annual extravaganza which took place earlier this year, BIVB’s Bourgogne Week will spring onto Hong Kong’s wine scene from 20-24 June in celebration of the release of the 2014 vintage.
50 wines will be in the spotlight at the ‘One Day for Bourgogne Wines’ tasting at the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel on Wednesday, 22 June and represented by some of Hong Kong’s best-known importers including Altaya Wines, Burgundy Wine Company, Corney & Barrow, Jebsen Beverage, Kedington, Kerry Wines, Montrose and Telford.
BIVB will also host its regular “Bourgogne Wines Club”, a sommelier master class this time focusing on Pernand-Vergelesses and some of its most reputed climats and Chablis will be in the spotlight on 23 June as part of a trade workshop again in the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel.
The week will culminate with the annual Chablis White Cocktail event taking place at the French Consul-General’s residence on 24 June.
Jean-François Bordet, President of the Chablis Commission of BIVB, said: “Hong Kong offers great opportunities of development to Bourgogne wines. The market is dynamic, mature, with highly sophisticated wine lovers. It was obvious for the producers and merchants that if we were to create a Bourgogne Week elsewhere than in the UK, which is our second market, it had to be in Hong Kong.”
Much has been said about the quality of the whites, with Amaury Devillard from Domaines Devillard in Mercurey commenting, “the 2014 vintage has confirmed its early promise: an excellent year, with good volumes. The wines, which are mostly now in the bottle, confirm that 2014 is an excellent vintage.
“The whites show beautifully, they are fantastic at their best, combining acidity with concentration, precision with fruit weight. The reds are attractive and full of fruit, likely to afford lots of drinking pleasure. No doubt that 2014 is a vintage that the consumers will love.”
