Mouton ’45 makes record at Koch sale
Ten bottles of Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 from the collection of Bill Koch has set a new record as one of the most expensive wine lots ever sold at auction.
The lot was sold for US$343,000, well above its high estimate of $120,000. One of if not the most famous vintage of Mouton ever made, the lot attracted bidding from around the world with buyers online and on the phone joining in.
The sale, held in New York by Sotheby’s, was the first of three sessions which overall will see over 20,000 bottles sold from the cellar of billionaire collector, Bill Koch.
With the other sessions taking place today and tomorrow (Saturday 21 May), the first session alone was almost 100% sold with the 900 lots realizing $4.8m.
CEO and president of Sotheby’s Wine Americas and Asia, Jamie Ritchie, commented: “We have seen an astonishing start to the Koch Cellar sale.
“The offerings on our opening day represent some of the greatest vintages from the world’s best wineries, with the likes of Mouton Rothschild 1945, Haut-Brion 1959, Palmer 1961 making rare appearances at auction. The prices realised are a testament to the reputation of one of the greatest cellars in the world.”
