Gosset cellarmaster Jean-Pierre Mareigner dies
Champagne Gosset’s cellarmaster of 33 years, Jean-Pierre Mareigner, has died at the age of 60.
Having overseen the production of Gosset Champagne for the past three decades, Mareigner had intended to retire next January, according to the Champagne house.
In a statement released this morning Gosset said: “It is with great sadness and regret that we inform you of the passing of Jean-Pierre Mareigner. For the past 33 years, as Cellar Master of Champagne Gosset, he has been the creator of the highly renowned cuvées of the Maison, the oldest wine house in Champagne from his home town of Aÿ. Our cellars are full of his work and will remind us of him for a very long time.”
The last Champagne to have been released by Gosset under Mareigner’s leadership was its 15 Years cuvée, which the house described as a “masterpiece” cuvée made by combining wines from several harvests and leaving it to rest for 15 years. The non-vintage brut, made from a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, was cellared by Mareigner in 1999 and released last month.
A funeral will take place on Friday, May 20 at 3pm in Aÿ.
