FEV to host Spanish Pavilion at Vinexpo HK

The Spanish Wine Federation (Federación Española del Vino, FEV) is to host a Spanish Pavilion, from which it will present wines from more than 30 different Spanish PDOs, at this month’s Vinexpo Hong Kong.

The Spanish Pavilion will bring together 29 wine producers and distributors from more than 30 of the 69 Spanish PDOs and 41 GIsThe move comes as Spain seeks to grow its presence in the Hong Kong market to capitalise on growing demand for Spanish wine in the region.

In 2015, Spain was Hong Kong’s fifth-largest wine supplier in terms of volume and eighth in value. Spanish exports were up 40.6% overall by volume from 2014, however – largely owing to the inroads being made by Spanish wine.

Hong Kong was the third-largest Asian destination for Spanish wines in 2015, preceded only by Mainland China and Japan.

Taking place from May 24-26, Vinexpo Hong Kong is one of the most important wine trade fairs in the Asian market for Spanish wineries. Over the past 15 years, Spanish wine exports to Hong Kong have grown an average of 13% in volume and 23.3% in value per year.

The Spanish Pavilion will bring together 29 wine producers and distributors from more than 30 of the 69 Spanish Protected Designations of Origin and 41 Geographical Indications. These will include well-known regions such as DOQ Rioja, DO Ribera del Duero and DO Rueda, but also other areas that consumers are gradually becoming more aware of, such as DO Cariñena, DO Jumilla, DO Toro and DO Penedés, as well as Spanish sparkling wine’s DO Cava.

Hong Kong and Asian wine professionals will also have the opportunity to taste red wines made from Tempranillo, Monastrell or Garnacha grapes, as well as the diversity of the whites on offer at eight guided tastings at the Spanish Pavilion from May 24-26.

Seminars and tastings will be hosted by renowned experts including Jennie Mack, Darrin Mak, Ling Cheong and Corinne Mui from the Asia Wine Service and Education Centre (AWSEC).

Other speakers will include Ivan Hui, a founding member the Hong Kong Wine Chamber of Commerce; Polly Tse, director of Dion Trading Ltd; and Javier Torres, export manager for the Matarromera Group.
