Symington helps open by-the-bottle Port pub
A UK-based pub chain has teamed up with Symington Family Estates to open a pub dedicated to serving Port by the bottle, with a list that boasts 13 vintage Ports dating from 2004 to 1977.
The pub will feature more than 30 Ports, including 13 vintage Ports dating from 2004 to 1977
The Fitzherbert Arms in Swynerton, Staffordshire, was recently restored by Cheshire Cat Pubs and Bars, reopening with a backbar dedicated to Port.
The pub’s 30-strong Port list has been curated in partnership with Symington Family Estates, whose portfolio includes Graham’s and Cockburn’s. More than 30 different Ports have been selected from family’ portfolio, including thirteen different vintage Ports dating from 2004 to 1977, a number of aged Tawny Ports and single harvest Tawny Ports.
All Ports will be served by the bottle with a selection served by the tot, glass or half bottle decanter.
“We were delighted when Mary and Tim approached us to work with them on opening a beautiful rural village pub committed to Port,” said Charlotte Symington of Symington Family Estates. “The Fitz has a wonderful, traditional English pub feel to it, whilst the Port element adds a novel twist. This gives its customers a unique opportunity to gain or expand their knowledge of Port”.
Mary Mclaughlin and Tim Bird, owners of Cheshire Cat Pubs and Bars, currently operate seven country pubs; five in Cheshire, one in Dorset and now one in Staffordshire. The pair have won numerous awards for restoring pubs of heritage and character.
The chain has five other pubs in its portfolio which take inspiration from different spirits, including the Cholmondeley Arms which serves over 300 types of gin.
“Restoring the Fitz has been an exciting project and we’re thrilled it has been so well received”, said Mary Mclaughlin. “We are extremely proud to open our first pub in Staffordshire and to restore the Fitz back to its former glory whilst also introducing a wide range of Ports for our guests to savour.”
