Rioja producer takes txokos on UK tour
Rioja producer Bodegas Beronia is to embark on a UK tour to educate Brits about the Basque gastronomic societies known as txokos.

Beronia will be visiting five of this summer’s Foodies Festivals – in Brighton, Syon Park, Tatton Park, Harrogate and Oxford – and engaging festival goers with a range of txoko-based sampling and tasting events from a specially branded Beronia Txoko Citroen H-Van.
The Txoko team will be sampling Beronia Rueda Verdejo and Beronia Crianza at the festivals with traditional Spanish pintxos, replicating their famous Txoko Clubs where friends get together to enjoy good food and drink.
Visitors to the stand will also have a chance to win a magnum of Beronia Reserva by taking part in “experiential activity” at the stand, a Beronia spokesperson said. Festivalgoers will be encouraged to pose for photographs with a magnum of Beronia while wearing berets and moustaches – traditional garb in the traditionally men-only clubs. Those who do so can then upload their images to a specially designed online platform to share via social media using the hashtag #BeroniaTxoko. A winning image will be selected on each day of the festivals.
“Beronia has always had a strong connection with gastronomy, dating back to the 1970s when a group of friends who had formed their own gastronomic society in Spain decided to make their own wine to complement their culinary prowess. The result was Bodegas Beronia, one of Rioja’s leading wineries.
“By taking the Beronia Txoko Club out across the UK to the Foodies Festivals, we are aiming to introduce even more people to the fun and tasty concept and let them know how they can get involved,” she added.
The first ever Beronia Txoko Club event was held in the UK in May 2014. This summer festival goers will have the opportunity to enjoy the Beronia Txoko experience at the following festivals:
Brighton Foodies Festival (30 April–2 May)
Syon Park Foodies Festival (28-30 May)
Tatton Park Foodies Festival (15-17 July)
Harrogate Foodies Festival (19-21 August)
Oxford Foodies Festival (2-4 September)
