Bordeaux 2015: campaign continues with Gazin
After a wave of petit châteaux and Coutet released their prices yesterday, today is the turn of Pomerol estate Gazin.
In recent years the emergence of Gazin has signalled that the latest campaign is, or is soon to be, fully underway.
It was released this morning at €45.6 per bottle ex-négociant, a 15.2% increase on the 2014 release price.
At £485 a case it is more expensive than several physical back vintages currently in the market and the 2012 is under £400 a case (13.4% cheaper) with a 95-point score from Robert Parker.
On the other hand it is cheaper than its 2005, 2009 and 2010 vintages, behind which merchants have ranked the 2015 vintage in Liv-ex’s recent survey.
Furthermore, Pomerol has been well-rated by critics in 2015 so far. Neal Martin’s scores for The Wine Advocate are yet to be released but Tim Atkin MW has rated it 96, Jean-Marc Quarin 90, James Molesworth 91-94, and Chris Kissack 16.5-17.5 – calling it “fresh, pure and bright”.
It’s always possible, therefore, buyers will think it worth a punt based on this positive critical opinion. The 2015 release price is also below the estate’s average price of €51.7 p/b over the last 10 vintages and its wines have produced a positive return for consumers in seven of the last 10 vintages – with an average return of 16%.
Also out this morning was Capbern which is being offered by merchants for £140 a case, up from £110 last year for the 2014.
Corney & Barrow’s Will Hargrove told the drinks business he thought it a “very good wine” and at that price it was probably “a buy”.
