Tesco refuses to sell Champagne to woman with self-harm scars

British retail giant Tesco has apologised after staff at one of its stores refused to sell Champagne to a recovering self-harmer because of the scars on her arm.

Becci Wain, 21, said she was left “humiliated” after being barred from buying Champagne as a present for her friend’s birthday.

The recovering self-harmer has been receiving therapy and hasn’t cut herself in over six months.

This didn’t stop staff at a Tesco store in Cambridge from insisting that she wasn’t fit to buy alcohol.

Becci told The Mirror that despite insisting to see a store supervisor, she was still turned away, leaving her feeling distraught.

Staff told her it was store policy to refuse to sell alcohol to her because of her scars, but after later calling Tesco’s head office Becci discovered no such policy exists.

A Tesco spokesman told the newspaper: “All our store colleagues are trained in the responsible selling of alcohol, but we recognise an error has been made in this instance.

“We’re pleased Ms Wain has accepted our apology and will continue to shop with us.”
