González Byass buys Rías Baixas winery
González Byass has acquired the Pazos de Lusco winery in the Rías Baixas DO, strengthening its position as a producer of Spanish wines.
Lusco, a 100% Albariño
Its acquisition means that González Byass is now present in nine Spanish wine producing regions: Rioja, Jerez, Cadiz, Cava, Penedés, Rueda, Somontano, Castilla and Rías Baixas.
Located in Salvaterra do Miño, Pazos de Lusco’s wine is produces wines made exclusively from the Albariño grape variety, grown in vineyard’s planted using a traditional pergola system.
Three wines are currently produced; Lusco, Pazo Piñero and Zios, which are all 100% Albariño.
“The Lusco and Pazo Piñeiro Albariños, made at the winery, represent the true essence of this particular Galician terroir”, said Gonzalez Byass in a statement announcing its purchase.
“With this acquisition, González Byass strengthens its portfolio and its position of leadership in quality wine production”.
The bodega also boasts a beautiful sixteenth-century manor consisting of a large house, chapel, stables and a small lodge.
The Rías Baixas DO is located on the western coast of northwestern Spain, covering some 3,000 square kilometres, and is known for its white wine production.
Average elevation in the region is around 250 meters above sea level with its soil typically a mixture of sand, limestone and granite.
