World Class launches HK and Macau 2016 competition
Diageo has announced the start of its 2016 World Class competition, open to all bartenders working in Hong Kong and Macau.
The yearly competition run by drinks giant, Diageo will launch on Monday, 29 February and is open to all bartenders currently working in Hong Kong and Macau.
The first round will revolve around the theme of ‘Daytime Drinking’ and contestants must create a cocktail using Bulleit Bourbon or Rye and submit their entries online by 3 April, as well as using Facebook and Instagram for additional promotion.
Criteria for the entries in this instance include explaining how the cocktail fits a particular daytime setting on a warm summer afternoon; for example, a brunch, a barbecue or a wedding.
There are three rounds of World Class including visiting guest bartenders, Charlie Ainsbury, Australian winner of the 2014 World Class final and owner of This Must Be the Place in Sydney; Nathan Beasley of the Black Pearl cocktail bar in Melbourne; and Bob Nolet and Erik Lorincz from the Savoy Hotel.
This year’s prize includes a trip to the global final in Miami in September and also an Australian ‘bar mentorship’ in July or August, involving three days at This Must be the Place and three days at Black Pearl.
Martin Newell, brand manager at Diageo Reserve, Moet Hennessy Diageo said, “It is exciting to once again be launching another year of World Class here in Hong Kong and Macau.
“In the last 12 months we have seen tremendous growth in the bar scene with many of the city’s bars and bartenders gaining recognition on the world stage, including 2015’s champion Antonio Lai. World Class is the world’s largest and most prestigious cocktail competition; our purpose is to support the professional development of bartenders and to inspire consumers to drink amazing cocktails.
“I look forward to trying the entries from bartenders old and new, young and old as we embark on the journey to find the Hong Kong and Macau World Class Bartender of the Year.”
