Wakefield launches ‘Goldilocks’ wine labels
Clare Valley winery Wakefield is preparing to launch new temperature-sensitive labels to help consumers drinks its wines at the correct temperature.

The winery’s Wakefield Estate and Promised Land ranges will feature an ‘Optimum Drinking Temperature Sensor’ on their back labels from April of this year, a spokesperson said.
The sensors use thermo-chromatic ink technology and change colour depending on the temperature of the wine, turning green when white or sparkling wine has reached optimum temperature, and turning fuchsia for reds.
Wakefield said this was the first time the technology has been used in such a way.
“We hope this exciting innovation sparks an interest amongst wine consumers about wine and serving temperature in the UK. Now there is no excuse not to enjoy our wine the way the winemaker intended,” said Justin Taylor, Wakefield company director.
“The serving temperature of a wine is often the crucial final element to how it will taste and many wine drinkers miss out on the finesse and flavours of a balanced wine by serving at an incorrect temperature,” a Wakefield spokesperson said.
“With the average thermostat now set at a toasty 23C, gone are the days when people can regard room temperature as the ideal serving temperature for red wines which are best served between 12C to 18C – somewhat cooler than modern-day houses.”
The new Optimum Drinking Temperature Sensor is being supported by a ‘Better By Degrees’ promotional campaign for retailers including point of sale packs for independent retailers.
