In a dramatic development of the gourmet junk food trend, a pizza topped with gold has gone on sale through a UK fast-food chain at £500 a pop.

As reported by the Evening Standard, Pizza GoGo has launched a luxurious new pizza topped with fantail prawns, lobster, beluga caviar and 23-carat gold leaf.
According to the company’s Facebook page, the £500 price tag includes “red carpet delivery” and a butler who will personally serve the pizza to you.
In a hilarious twist, those keen to pimp their pizza with a stuffed crust will have to shell out an additional £2 for the privilege. The pizza needs to be ordered three days in advance from Pizza GoGo’s head office in Essex.
The gold-flecked Cristal donut
This isn’t the first instance of a humble foodstuff being given the gourmet treatment. Last month, The Manilla Social Club in Brooklyn started selling donuts infused with Cristal Champagne and flecked with 24-carat gold for US$100 each.
In 2014, a $100 hot dog soaked in 100-year-old Louis XIII Cognac and topped with Kobe beef became the world’s most expensive example of the fast-food snack.
The same year, chef Chris Large of Honky Tonk in Chelsea created London’s most expensive burger, the “Glamburger”, featuring lobster, Kobe beef and black truffle housed in a gold bun for £1,100.
In 2012, British chef Ben Tish created the world’s most expensive mince pie. Priced at £3,500, it included a double measure of Louis XIII Cognac, foie gras, white truffle and gold leaf.
Wine Intelligence pinpointed the “upgrading” trend as one of the key drivers among millennials this year, which reflects a consumer desire for bespoke twists on firm favourites.
In keeping with the “everyday luxury” trend, McDonald’s branches in Singapore have started offering sachets of truffle seasoning for diners to add to their fries.
