Classic Port sells out at Bonhams
A pipe of 1963 Port has sold at Bonhams for £72,850 at the auctioneer’s latest London sale.
The extremely rare pipe of Fonseca, made up of 468 bottles, were sold in cases of six to 12 for between £1,645 and £2,115.
Several cases of 1982 Bordeaux were also in much demand, a case of Petrus from that vintage making £32,350, another of Lafite £19,975, a case of Mouton Rothschild £8,813 and one of Margaux £5,875.
In total the sale made £573,300 with 82% of the lots sold.
Richard Harvey MW, head of Bonhams Wine Department, commented: “It’s extremely unusual to find a pipe of port virtually intact and that, combined with the quality of the wine regarded by its producers, the Guimaraens family, as one of their finest vintages, proved very attractive to bidders.”
