Seinfeld-themed bar opens in Melbourne
A bar dedicated to Seinfeld character George Costanza has opened in Melbourne, with the actor that played him giving his seal of approval to the venture.
George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, was Jerry Seinfeld’s best friend in the sitcom.
George’s Bar opened on New Year’s Even in Fitzroy, Melbourne, with its menu and decor based on the socially awkward character of George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander in the hit US sitcom Seinfeld.
Pictures of George and signed photos of the cast adorn its walls, while its menu is inspired by the character with dishes including ‘The Costanza’ toastie, and cocktails such as the ‘Bloody George’, a twist on a bloody mary, and the ‘Marissa Tomei’, described as a classic Pina Colada.
Classic Costanza quotes from TV show also feature throughout the bar such as “it’s not a lie if you believe it” and “everyone must like me, I must be liked.”
News of the bar’s opening has reached the actor himself, Jason Alexander, who took to Twitter to joke that he “may not have an Emmy”, but did have a bar in Melbourne.
Co-owner and operator Dave Barrett told Fairfax Media that his love of Seinfeld had fuelled the creation of the bar.
“We came up with the name George’s and worked backwards, concept theming it. George Costanza suits a bar in a lot of ways. The humour around George works,” said Barrett. “So at the moment we’ve got our toasties menu which has items like The Art Vandalay, The Costanza and The Mom and Pop. We’re still finalising the cocktail menu but it will be similar. We’ll be continually doing things and layering the theme.”
Barrett hopes to expand the Costanza collection by featuring different Costanza paintings by Melbourne artists.
“One guy contacted me last night who lives in Melbourne and who is in the middle of eight different George Costanza paintings”, he added. “We are talking about doing a show with him.”
Its launch follows the opening of a Will Ferrel-themed bar in New York called Stay Classy New York.
