London gets first burger and fine wine restaurant

Capitalising on the popularity of fine wine and junk food pairings, a restaurant serving burgers and high-end wines will open in London’s Dalston later this month.

Lucky Chip Burgers & Wine is the first burger specialist in the capital to offer a large selection of fine wines, with a list stretching to over 100 drops.

The project is the brainchild Ben Denner, founder of popular peripatetic burger stall Lucky Chip, who decided to give his first permanent site a fine wine focus due to his passion for wine.

The list has a strong New World focus, with the US, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia all shown some love.

Among the wines to have caught our eye are Ste Michelle Eroica Riesling 2012; Domaine Cuilleron La Petite Côte Condrieu 2013; Copain Syrah 2012; Torbreck Descendent Shiraz 2006 and Pinot Noirs from Copain and Hirsch Vineyards.

Denner, who is planning burger and wine matching evenings, has only added a small mark-up on the more expensive bottles to encourage diners to trade up.

In his inaugural list, bottles range from £29 to £150, though it has been reported that one of the wines to be added to the list will top the £500 mark.

On Thursday nights a “cult” wine from the cellar will be opened and served by the glass at cost price, while tasting menus paired with wines by the glass will be on offer on Fridays at the restaurant’s 10-seater bar.

Once a month a magnum will be opened and served to customers by the glass alongside a burger created specially to pair with the wine. In addition to fine wines, Lucky Chip will serve rare Bourbons and ryes, and a small selection of cocktails.

On the food front, burgers will include Lucky Chip classics like the Kevin Bacon, Royale with Cheese and El Chappo, along with new creations like the Antonio Banderas made with 50-day dry-aged Galician beef. It will also serve steaks.

All of the burgers on offer can be made with the Galician beef at an extra cost, while sides include fried chicken wings truffle fries with Gorgonzola.
